Gadsden Flag History & Information
The Gadsden flag is a historical American flag with a yellow background with a coiled rattlesnake. Under the snake is the phrase: "Don't Tread on Me". The flag was designed by Christopher Gadsden who was an American general and statesman. The Rattle snake on the flag is symbolic of the American colonies.
In fall 1775, the United States Navy was established. In addition to the navy, five companies of Marines accompanied the Navy on their first mission: to prevent British ships from carrying war supplies to the British troops in the colonies. The first Marines that enlisted were from Philadelphia and carried drums painted yellow, depicting a coiled rattlesnake with thirteen rattles, and the motto "Don't Tread on Me."
